There are many good brands out there that offer reliable telescope especially the main tube but not all offer a separate mounting system yet, Celestron is one of the few that not only has amazing telescopes but also reliable mount for your current tube or if you want to upgrade the mounting that comes with the main telescope. They also carry few models to choose from and most of them are instantly paired with the respective telescope lines or come in a pair with the tube already.

Among those mounting and the type of saddle they have, their CGEM II and CGX mounting are probably the most popular to choose. As you may already know both of them are an equatorial mount which is why most people are choosing them to upgrade their older mount or to have a more reliable system for their main tube. CGEM II and CGX Design

As you can see from the sample picture above both of them are quite bulky but side by side the CGX is looking like a different mounting altogether and even from the first sight this model is very rigid or robust so we guess it also comes with higher load capacity and it is true with the 15 lbs. additional load compared to the CGEM II which is rated up to 40 lbs. already. What’s amazing is their weight is not far apart from each other with CGX about 4 lbs. heavier while the CGEM II is 40 lbs.

From the material they are very durable and robust without any flimsy part but we also like the fact that they include tripod here with the mounting yet, we are not very sure whether these 20 lbs. tripod will be able to sustain both main tube and mounting weight at maximum capacity. From the external differences, besides the overall shape and construction, the new CGX did make the stance on the mount a little bit lower and stouter.

CGEM II and CGX Saddle

Moving further, what makes CGEM II and CGX very similar to each other in our opinion is their suitability itself because both of them are adopting the same dovetail saddle with dual fit feature which means they can be used with wider CGE and D-style plate, as well as Vixen or CG-5 saddle plate. In our opinion this is what makes these mounts become a great choice for many since matching the saddle plate limits our option and these two will give the versatility for you to basically accommodate more types of telescope.

It also cuts the budget to purchase an adapter since usually we have to add something in between the main tube and mount if their systems are not compatible to each other. Celestron also has other mounts with the dual saddle plates system such as the CGX-L and Advanced VX for the options but with these two you can mount almost any optical tube.

CGEM II and CGX Tripod

The material seems to be the same and the features such as marking on the extending part of the legs are still the same as well. These markings are very useful in our opinion because usually we have to adjust the leg several times to get the perfect balance but now we can see and put them on the same height just with one try.

CGEM II and CGX Motor

The last part we want to mention is their motor system and in this part while their physical design changed, both CGEM II and CGX are actually using similar systems or the same spring loaded brass worm wheel and stainless steel worm. This system ensures a smooth movement and tracking to make sure the best experience but in addition CGX also has new software to control the mount directly from the computer which is more powerful than their previous one.


These mountings are amazing for their versatility and ability to hold a huge weight but slightly different when it comes to design and capacity. CGX design has been tweaked to maximize the load capacity which is rated up to 55 lbs. or 15 lbs. heavier than CGEM II by removing some parts and redesigning the mount. The main system is still the same including the mounting but they also include new more powerful software.
