Celestron NexStar 127SLT vs 130SLT

Deciding on what telescope to buy online can be frustrating since there are many things that you need to consider before fully go with a type of telescope. The struggle is real since they look quite similar with different range of prices.

If you are currently struggling on the list of choices, then you can take a look at the Celestron NexStar SLT range which is a range of premium telescopes offered by Celestron. This range can be suitable for beginner to intermediate astronomers.

The features that stand out from this range are the top quality optics that is commonly appeared in more advanced telescopes and the computerized mount used in this range.

The mount makes the viewing process becomes more enjoyable since it will automatically point towards the object that you can select from a database of over 4000 celestial objects.

This is the reason why it is highly suitable for beginners since they can easily find objects in the sky, which will be a more effective and efficient way compared to searching it manually.

There are 4 models in this range. However, only two of them that often caught astronomers’ attention to buy them. They are Celestron NexStar 127SLT and Celestron NexStar 130SLT.

If you are stuck on deciding what to buy between these two, check out their comparison below.

Celestron NexStar 127SLT Maksutov Telescope

As the name, this telescope is a 127 mm Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope that is easy to be used despite being equipped with many features. Celestron NexStar 127 mm is a great choice for beginners who would like to learn more about astronomy. Read also: Celestron AstroMaster 114EQ vs PowerSeeker 127EQ.

The telescope is easy to be assembled even by those who are very new to telescope world. You will get the optical tube, finderscope, computerized mount with remote, two eyepieces, correct image prism, tripod, a copy of the SkyX software, and the NSOL telescope control software when you are unboxing the product.

This telescope is a travel friendly one since the optical tube is short and compact, which makes it becomes portable and easy to be carried around. But still, you will need to take a good care while packing it for travelling.

The optics used give clear images of the celestial objects including the planets, the moon, and even the deep-space objects. Celestron NexStar 127SLT is best used to view closer objects in our solar system.

It has two eyepieces which are a 25 mm with 60x magnification power and a 9 mm with 167x magnification power that could bring great image without distorting the image itself.

The telescope can also be used for a terrestrial viewing as it has erect image prism that delivers image in their right position.

As the vocal point of the telescope, the computerized mount does not only offer 4000 celestial objects location but can also track the movement of the objects. Amazingly, the database can be updated and upgraded.

The accessories featured in this telescope offer an upgraded astronomical experience where you can capture and record incredible images using NexImage and even control the telescope through your smartphone by using SkyPortal WiFi accessory.

The tripod has sturdy 1.25” steel tube legs that could increase your observation experience. The tripod also has an accessory tray as a place where you can store the telescope accessories.

In short, Celestrin NexStar 127SLT is a great premium telescope that can be used by beginner to intermediate levels. It is equipped with high quality optics that could give clear image of the moon and the planets, short and compact optical tube that makes it portable, and computerized mount as the main feature, which offers thousands of celestial objects location and tracking system.

Celestron NexStar 130SLT Telescope

Celestron NexStar 130SLT offers the largest aperture in this range since it has 130 mm aperture and featured reflector as the optical tube, which makes it quite different from the 127SLT.

When you are unboxing the product, you will get the optical tube, two eyepieces, viewfinder, computerized mount, tripod, SkyX software, and NSOL software, which can be assembled easily, just like the 127SLT.

The Newtonian reflector that acts as the optical tube makes the telescope becomes longer than the previous model but makes it lighter and way easier to carry around. The important point of carrying this telescope is to carefully maneuvering it.

It has two eyepieces which are a 25 mm that gives 26x magnification power and a 9 mm eyepiece that has 72x magnification power. The viewfinder, however, is made from plastic and is most likely considered off of the telescope feature, which is the same as the finderscope in the 127SLT.

The computerized mount in this telescope is similar to the one in 127SLT in which it can provide 4000 objects database location and tracking system. The database is also upgradeable and updateable.

The tripod also has sturdy legs that could make your observation comfortable and has a tray for storing the telescope accessories.

Overall, it is a premium telescope that offers high quality optics that can be great for both close and deep viewing of celestial objects. It is also designed to be a relatively lightweight telescope that can be easily carried.

Celestron NexStar 127SLT vs 130SLT

Final Comparison

Both of the telescopes offer high quality optics that can be great for beginner to intermediate astronomers. The features, however, differ on the use of the optical tube where the 130SLT uses a Newtonian reflector.

The 130SLT has a slightly larger aperture which makes it perfect for viewing both closer and deep celestial objects. It is also lighter than the 127SLT. However, the 130SLT is shorter in focal length compared to the 127SLT.

Since the 127SLT is a Maksutov that has closed tube, it will not show diffraction spikes. While the 130SLT as a Newtonian or open tube, will have some. The 130SLT, however, will cool faster and has more resistant to dew formation compared to the 127SLT. That is why you will need a dew-shield or a heater to avoid the forming dew on the 127SLT.

Further, the 130SLT will need alignment when it is going to be used. The 127SLT, however, needs little or even no alignment. This often comes to the consideration of beginner astronomers. However, alignment is not hard to do and it should not be a problem. But of course, you can always take it into your consideration.

Other than these, they have similar main feature, such as the computerized mount that could located and track celestial objects.

After all, you are the only one who could choose which one you would want to buy.
