Telescopes

Having a healthy eye with a perfect vision is great; you can see properly and not require glasses like many of us. However, no matter how good your eyes are, we can’t see anything that is placed further away even when they are aligned perfectly to your eyes. This is why we have optics to help observing a further object or very small items or organism. For us who are into astronomy, the must have is a telescope and before buying one, here is some information to note.

  • Telescope Magnification

The function of a telescope itself is to magnify an object located further away in this case celestial and terrestrial objects hence many of us are paying attention to “power” or magnification. Some may ask how much power a telescope has, to decide which they want to have but, in fact it is an overrated term which is not ideal for buying decisions. This is because while for example 300x sounds amazing, the light gathered by the scope is spreading over a larger area creating blurry images.

In some cases the lower magnification produces a much better image and better viewing experience; very similar to the zooming function in our camera. Smaller magnification is especially good for observing objects that are spreading out in the sky like the clusters or nebulae. Additionally, high powered telescopes may also need specific requirements for the eyepiece thus, we have to look for the model that works best with the certain telescope.

  • Telescope Eyepiece

To use a telescope for viewing, we also need to have the eyepiece and usually the device is sold with at least one in the box but there are models or companies that offer two or three eyepieces with the main device. They are rated by millimeters and the smaller the number, the higher its magnification will be for example the 20mm can only magnify at 50x but the 10mm can double it. We also have to consider what we want to view when choosing the eyepiece.

This is because while higher magnification will let you see details in for example moon, they will not be ideal for viewing anything large such as nebulae as it will only show you a small part of the whole cloud of dust.

  • The Price

Just like the majority of people, we shop based on a certain budget and try as best as possible to get the best product for the resource we can spend. Beginners and hobbyists don’t need to spend so much on a good telescope because it will be a waste of money to do so but, we also recommend staying away from any brands or companies that are not focusing on the device because their performances are often questionable and can even be useless.

About Celestron AstroMaster 70AZ

Looking for a telescope in the affordable spectrum may require some research because it is difficult to optimize cost production and quality yet, not impossible at all and there are actually lots of good models in the cheaper section that we can choose. Many of them are in the range of $100 to $300 and personally we don’t recommend going for super cheap products unless there is sale from popular names. We also prefer these well-known brands because they tend to be more reliable.

It is easier to shop from them as you can find their products easily and one of our favorite telescope brands today is Celestron. This brand is almost like the first choice for anyone who just gets into the hobby due to its good quality and friendly price point. You can find both mirror and lens telescopes or a combination of both but be prepared to spend more if you want something like Compound or Catadioptric as they are usually more expensive especially compared to mirror type.

This brand also has lots of good options on the entry level and if the mirror is not for you then how about Celestron AstroMaster 70AZ. This telescope uses lenses or called a Refractor which might be less compact in terms of length if compared to other mirror types but is very slim if form factor is a consideration as well. In our previous Celestron AstroMaster 130 Review, the telescope is a Reflector and very similar in terms of performance to the 114 size as they come from the same family.

- POWERFUL REFRACTOR TELESCOPE: The Celestron AstroMaster 70AZ is a powerful and user-friendly refractor telescope with fully coated glass optics
- HIGH-QUALITY 70MM OPTICS: Our Celestron telescope features a powerful, fully coated 70mm glass optic objective lens.
- QUICK SETUP & LIGHTWEIGHT FRAME: This telescope for adults features a lightweight frame and a panning handle with Alt-Az control for smooth and accurate pointing.
- INCLUDED ACCESSORIES: We’ve included two eyepieces (20mm and 10mm), an erect image star diagonal, a travel tripod, and a red dot finder scope

This lens telescope is one of the best you can get in this price range and will be much better if you can get it at a discount because the original price itself is already very attractive. Note that this is the new version of AstroMaster 70AZ because this brand seems to change their products once in a while and the former model actually has one eyepiece while the new telescope has two.

Celestron AstroMaster 70AZ Design

The first thing we love from a Refractor is their build because they usually feel more solid than the Reflector. It can be just personal preference but we feel like that this type of telescope require less delicate handling. The unit itself is very long with a length of 36-inch but similar to other telescopes from the brand, you will get a full set in the box including the main telescope, it’s simple mounting system, a pair of eyepieces and the tripod.

This tripod is very light and it is made from steel which is very sturdy to support the already lightweight telescope but it is not the type that can stand still in a present of strong wind. This tripod height is also adjustable using a plastic fastener on the legs and can be adjusted from 32 to 51-inch tall. As the name suggests, this model is using an alt-azimuth mounting system but this is manual so we have to adjust the position using the simple mechanism.

Celestron AstroMaster 70AZ Specification

As we already know, the most important part of a telescope is the aperture because it decides how much light captured by the device and the bigger it gets, the brighter or better the viewing experience will be. Celestron AstroMaster 70AZ is very small and it only has this 70mm or 2.76-inch aperture which is on the smaller spectrum but it also has 900mm focal length and f/13 focal ratio that are already great for beginner or hobbyist to play around with.

Together with the tripod and main tube, you will find two eyepieces in the box so we assume that this is the newer model. Some users said that the newer eyepieces are not as good as the older one but in our opinion it works just fine. One of them is standard 20mm with 45x magnification and the other one is 10mm with 90x magnification while the maximum magnification of this telescope is claimed to be 165x.

Celestron AstroMaster 70AZ Performance

Performance wise, we agree that Celestron AstroMaster 70AZ is one of the best telescopes in this price range especially for Refractor because it comes great out of the box with the eyepieces they included. The moon looks beautifully bright and this is also easily one of the most popular objects we see through this telescope. When the sky is clear, you can see the craters and further details or textures on the moon. If you want to push it further, Saturn and its ring is also visible.

Just don’t expect it to look as clear and crisp as the moon but you can definitely see this popular planet using this telescope. Jupiter is also visible and you can see its four moons as well but one of our favorites is still the Orion nebula.

Celestron AstroMaster 70AZ Mounting System

The last point we want to mention is the mounting system and compared to Equatorial, we do think that alt-azimuth is the best if you will give this for a present especially for children because they can mount it themselves as it is very simple. What we like better is that this model is an improved version of the former telescope which is flimsier in our opinion but this one is better; it rotates smoothly and easier to position while also firm enough to keep the telescope steady.

Celestron AstroMaster 70AZ User

You can find so many good telescopes without having to spend so much such as this Celestron AstroMaster 70AZ. This model is very simple hence it is great for people who are not fond of readjusting the mirror in their device or plan to give it to smaller users like their children or family members. Its affordable price also makes it ideal if you are not very sure yet about the hobby or don’t plan to stick to astronomy in the future.
